Springfield Ilinois Roofers

Residential roofing is the bread and butter of our business, which is why, after servicing hundreds of homes in Central Illinois, we’re the premier Springfield, IL roofing company.  But while we are experts in the best installation practices and materials, we know that each home is unique and presents its own challenges, which is why we’re extremely thorough in our inspection and bidding process.  We’d rather exceed expectations by finishing a job quicker than planned and under budget than take longer than expected and incur unforeseen costs.

While there are many roof materials available to consumers, as Springfield, Illinois roofing contractors, we know that our varying Midwest climate and common architectural styles dictate the type that are best for homes in our area.  As such, roofing with shingles is by far the most common method of construction, with metal roofing quickly growing in popularity.  Regardless of the material, a homeowner can expect the installation process to take between 1-3 days on average.

We are highly experienced roofer company in Springfield, IL, well-versed in both shingle and metal methods.  We can work with you to determine the best option for your home, timeline, and budget.

Tips from the Pros

“Homeowners often make the mistake of thinking that their roof is a maintenance-free component of their home; something that can be left alone once installed, but that’s not the case!  Just like almost every other part of a house, a roof requires regular maintenance and repair.  Storms, wind, and other weather extremes are not kind to roofs and require them to be regularly inspected to ensure there are no areas requiring attention.  Additionally, homeowners should regularly be checking their attics for leaks, especially once a roof is reaching the end of its useful life.”  - Owner, Springfield Roofing

Asphalt Shingles

By far the most popular material used in residential roofs, asphalt shingles are cost-effective with a high hail rating, low maintenance costs, and easier repairs than other materials.  There are two main categories: fiberglass and traditional organic.  Roofing shingles in Springfield are made from a fiberglass base mat, covered with an asphalt coating made to keep out water, and covered in granules to protect against the son.  They have a high fire rating, are lighter weight, and have a longer life expectancy than their organic counterparts.

Traditional organic shingles are constructed from recycled felt paper that saturated in asphalt to resist water and covered in adhesive asphalt that contains ceramic granules.  They are thicker, more flexible and more expensive than fiberglass, but are prone to warping.
Asphalt shingles come in many colors and styles, from basic to decorative, and are becoming increasingly harder to distinguish from more expensive material options, such as slate and wood.  They can be either 3-tab, containing cutouts along the lower edge, or architectural, which have an additional layer of asphalt to make them more dimensional.

Asphalt shingles tout a 15-30-year lifespan, with the actual amount of useful life depending upon climate, weather patterns, roof slope, and potential for algae growth.  Areas that experience weather extremes such as long, hot summers, harsh winters, and crazy temperature swings are likely going to require more repairs and quicker replacements.  In terms of roof pitch, the steeper the slope, the easier it is for water to slide off.  Lower slopes often have issues with ponding water, which is very destructive. In very damp and subtropical climates, algae and fungus can set up shop on a roof should consider an algae-resistant layer.

Metal Roofing

Quickly gaining popularity for their durability and many other positive features, Springfield, IL metal roofing is a great alternative to shingles.  While they do cost more initially to install, they last 2-3 times as long as shingles (50+ years!), so usually end up costing less overall over the course of a home’s life.  By reflecting the sun so well, metal decreases a home’s energy consumption by up to 40%.  It also increases a home’s property value and can drastically decrease insurance premiums.  Unlike many other materials, metal is not nearly as affected by the elements.  You can choose from many colors and styles; some even designed to mimic shingles, wood, tile, and others.  It is worth noting that metal repairs are generally more expensive than shingles, and it can be more difficult for firefighters to gain access to your home through the roof in a fire.  Roofing metal is generally steel, but can also be made of tin or other metals.

Understanding a Roof's Components

There are four basic parts that make up a residential roof, including:
Underlayment: The layer of paper that’s attached to the plywood sheets that seals the roof from the elements.   Generally, a membrane is required for waterproofing purposes.

Flashing: Pieces of metal that divert water away from areas where it could collect.

Roofing material: Shingles, metal, tile, concrete, slate, wood, or other materials make up the top later of a roof.
Trim: Put in place to protect seams in the roof.
